1.
Does SLA conduct checks on forested land? What are the measures SLA take to prevent mosquito breeding on forested land?
While such forested State Land is left in its natural form, SLA does inspect them at regular intervals for signs of potential mosquito-breeding, especially in water-bearing receptacles. Generally, Aedes mosquitoes that transmit Dengue are not found breeding on forested land. We have placed out a total of 4234-ha of frequently visited forested State land under our patrol agent. These sites are inspected twice per month and immediate actions will be taken to clear away discarded water-bearing receptacles left behind by inconsiderate people. However, to ensure that maintenance of State land is kept up, we would also need the cooperation of the public to not indiscriminately discard unwanted materials such as food containers, drink cans and other forms of water-bearing receptacles on vacant land which can lead to the breeding of mosquitoes.
2.
How does SLA minimise the risk of bush fires?
We take the occurrences of bush fires seriously, and are working closely with the SCDF, NParks and our managing agents to minimise the risk of bush fires, especially in fire prone areas. We have stepped up our regular maintenance programme to clear the overgrown vegetation in these areas. This is being done in consultation with NParks as we are mindful of the need to preserve nature and greenery while minimizing fire risks.Measures are also being taken to remove disused farm structures that posed a fire risk and to create and/or deepen buffer zones such as dirt tracks to minimise the risk of spread of any bush fire in areas that are identified by SCDF.
We also wish to repeat SCDF's reminder to users of vacant state land that vegetation fires can be started and spread through the indiscriminate burning of unwanted items in open fields or vegetated areas, or if lighted materials such as matches or cigarette butts are carelessly disposed in these places.
