While a lawyer may be engaged to attend a hearing and make submissions for a litigant, this is not mandatory for a litigant who is an individual (including sole proprietor) as he / she may appear in-person. In all other cases, including a company, limited liability partnership or unincorporated association, the entity must be represented by a lawyer generally although leave may be obtained from court for a duly authorised officer to represent the same.

While a lawyer may be engaged to commence an action for a litigant, this is not mandatory for a litigant who is an individual (including sole proprietor) as he / she file the commencement documents in-person. In all other cases, including a company, limited liability partnership or unincorporated association, the entity must be represented by a lawyer generally although leave may be obtained from court for a duly authorised officer to represent the same in filing the commencement documents.
