As a responsible port and member of the international community, Singapore is committed to doing its part to protect the marine environment. We participate actively in the work by the maritime industry, led by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO), to limit the adverse environmental impact of port and shipping activities.
For example, as a signatory to the IMO’s International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL), Singapore applies sulphur oxide (SOx) emission limits on Singapore-flagged ships as well as foreign-flagged ships calling at our port. Our port operators are also doing their part to address air pollution by introducing more duel-efficient and less pollutive port equipment.
In addition, as an incentive for companies which are ready or thinking about undertaking environmentally-friendly shipping practices which are above and beyond what is mandated by the IMO, the Maritime and Ports Authority of Singapore (MPA) has launched the Maritime Singapore Green Initiative, comprising a series of programmes to promote clean and green shipping in Singapore. MPA will invest up to SGD$100 million over the next five years in the Initiative to promote “green” shipping and the response from the maritime industry has been very encouraging.
