Gas Installation & Safety Precautions

1.
How do I know whether the appliance installed, maintained, repaired or replaced by the licensed Gas Service Worker or licensed Gas Service Worker (Restricted) is safe for use?
The licensed Gas Service Worker or licensed Gas Service Worker (Restricted) will issue a written statement certifying that the gas appliance has been tested and is safe for use.

Where can I get a list of licensed gas service workers or licensed gas service worker (restricted)?
You can search for licensed Gas Service Workers or licensed Gas Service Workers (Restricted) on the ELISE website. Or you can check with your gas retailer who has employed licensed Gas Service Workers or licensed Gas Service Workers (Restricted).
3.
I will be doing renovation work which is minimal. So I would still be staying in my home during this period. What precautions must I take for gas appliances?
  • You should regularly check that there is no smell of gas in your home.
  • At the end of each day during the renovation work, turn off all gas appliances and check that the meter is not registering any usage of gas. If the meter is still ticking, there is likely to be a gas leak. If so, turn off the gas control valve at the gas meter. Call City Gas at 1800 752 1800 immediately.

For major renovation works, you should contact City Gas to temporarily cut off your gas supply before commencing renovation works.

What do I have to do if I need to repair my gas appliances?
You would need to engage a licensed Gas Service Worker or licensed Gas Service Worker (Restricted) to carry out any repair work. This also includes the installation, maintenance, repair, testing or replacement of town gas appliances.
5.
How would I know that a gas service worker has a valid licence?
A licensed gas service worker will have a licence card issued by EMA. The licence card shows EMA's logo, licence number, name and a photograph of the licensed worker and the validity date of the licence.
6.
What should I do if there is a gas leak in my home?
i. Extinguish any cigarettes or flames.
ii. Turn off the gas control valve at the gas meter.
iii. Open all windows and doors to ventilate the area.
iv. Do not switch on or off any electrical or light switches.
v. Do not try to detect the gas leak with a flame.
vi. Do not use telephones in the area of the gas leak.
vii. Leave the house if there is a strong smell of gas.
viii. If you are using town gas, call the City Gas Customer Service Centre 24-Hr Hotline at Tel: 1800-7521800 to report the gas leak.

What other safety measures should I take to ensure the safe use of gas?
i. Keep all combustible materials, e.g. paper towels, curtains, spray cans, etc away from gas cookers.
ii. Open windows and doors for ventilation when cooking or operating a gas appliance.
iii. Ensure there is no popping sound from the cooker when using it. Do not leave the cooker unattended when cooking.
iv. Ensure that pots on the cooker do not boil over and extinguish the flame, which may result in a leakage of gas.
v. Keep your gas cooker clean and in good working order.
vi. Keep the access to gas control valve at the gas meter clear from obstruction.
vii. Ensure there is no smell of gas from any gas appliance.
viii. Keep a fire extinguisher of multi-purpose (dry powder type) handy.
ix. Contact your gas retailer or engage a licensed gas service worker if you wish to have the gas pipe or gas appliance repaired or replaced.
x. Always purchase a gas cooker with the SAFETY Mark.

8.
I would like to carry out some renovation work. This may include hanging a picture/ mirror on the wall. What precautions should I take to protect my concealed gas pipes?
  • You should ensure that any alteration work in your premises carried out by your renovation contractor will not damage any concealed service piping such as gas pipes in your premises and cause a gas leak.
  • You should ascertain the location of the concealed gas pipes prior to carrying out any work such as drilling, nailing and hacking on your walls. You can locate the concealed gas pipes, wiring and other services in the wall using a metal detector.
  • If you wish to install, replace, alter or repair any gas pipe or gas appliance, you should engage a licensed gas service worker to carry out the work.
  • As a precautionary measure, request City Gas to temporarily cut off town gas supply to your premises during the renovation work. You can arrange with City Gas to turn on the town gas supply again after the renovation work is completed. City Gas will check that the gas installation is safe before turning on the gas supply.   • If you decide not to turn off your town gas supply during the renovation period, you are advised to conduct regular checks to ensure that there is no gas leak or smell of town gas in your premises.
  • At the end of each day, turn off all gas appliances and check that the gas meter is not registering any usage of gas. If the gas meter is still ticking, there is likely to be a gas leak. Turn off the gas control valve at the gas meter. Contact your licensed gas service worker immediately.

9.
I am a non-residential gas consumer. Whom can I engage for gas service work for my piped gas installation and gas appliances?
A licensed Gas Service Worker is permitted to carry out the following gas service work where the operating pressure is not more than 30 mbars:

i. To submit plans for works on all retail consumers' internal pipes;
ii. To construct, fix, alter, repair and renew gas pipes and fittings;
iii. To install, maintain, repair and test gas appliance; and
iv. To install or remove gas meters and to turn-on gas supply on behalf of a gas licensee.

However, if the operating pressure of the gas installation is more than 30 mbars, gas service work related to piped gas installation or appliances must be carried out by, or under the supervision of a professional engineer with a mechanical engineering discipline.
10.
What should I do if I want to apply for gas supply, install gas pipes and install town gas appliances in my home?
For gas supply, you can make an application to City Gas. You will need to engage a licensed Gas Service Worker to install gas pipes and gas appliances. City Gas can arrange for its licensed gas service worker to install exposed gas pipes in HDB premises only and gas appliances in both HDB and private premises. City Gas will fix the gas meter and ensure appropriate tests are performed by the licensed gas service worker before turning on the gas supply to your home.

City Gas will issue a Statement of Turn-on and a written statement certifying that the appliances have been tested and are safe for use. Keep these statements for your record.
