Schemes of service
1.	What is the Scheme of Service for Police Officer?

Physical Requirements
1.	Will I be accepted if I am flat-footed?
	It depends. You may apply but you will be subjected to medical and physical assessment. Generally, applicants who are assessed to have slight flat-footedness are acceptable. back to top


2.	What are the minimum physical requirements for joining the Singapore Police Force?
	You should meet the following minimum requirements as listed here back to top


Educational Requirements
1.	What are the minimum education qualifications in order to join the Police Force?
	You should possess at least 5 GCE 'O' level credits or NITEC (formerly ITE-NTC2). back to top


2.	Can GCE 'O' Level / GCE 'A' Level passes be combined?
	You can combine credits for GCE 'O' Level from 2 separate sittings but not for GCE 'A' Level back to top


3.	I hold a GCE 'A' Level certificate. Is a pass in GP compulsory?
	No. It is not necessary to have a pass in GP. However, without a pass in GP, you will not be eligible for the Direct Entry Sergeant scheme. Only full GCE 'A' Level certificate holders (at least 2 'A' and 2 'AO' including a pass in GP) and recognised Diploma holders will be entitled for the scheme. back to top


4.	I've got a D7 for my English in the GCE 'O' Level. Can I apply?
	You are eligible to apply. However, you will need to take an English proficiency test. back to top


5.	If I have a diploma from Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, am I eligible for the direct Entry Sergeant scheme?
	You are eligible to apply. However, you will need to take an English proficiency test back to top


National Service
1.	If I've not served my National Service, can I apply?
	Yes, you can. SPF will have to check with Central Manpower Base (CMPB) prior to your appointment for approval to release you from full-time National Service enlistment. All male Singaporeans/ Singapore Permanent Residents who have not completed full-time national service must serve a minimum term of 5 years (known as Minimum Term of Engagement, MTE) as a regular officer so as to fulfil your full-time National Service obligation. back to top


2.	If I'm a full-time National Serviceman, who is presently serving my 3 months Basic Military Training (BMT), am I eligible to apply?
	Yes, you may. However, you have to submit your application early (preferably at least 2 months prior to your completion of BMT). This is to facilitate the arrangement for your interview before your BMT completion and vocational unit posting. back to top


3.	Is working in SPF dangerous since officers have to deal with criminals, drug addicts, traffickers?
	Our force is well known for its professionalism, even at the international level. All our officers are well trained and operations are well planned. As such, the margin of error for harm to dawn on them while they are carrying out operational duties is very slim. back to top


Rank Structure and Salary Scales Of Police Officer
1.	What is the basic salary if I join the Police Force as a Police Officer?
	You will join as Corporal or Sergeant. Your entry salary will depend on your educational qualification. Those who had completed full-time National Service will be granted NS increments. For more details, click here. back to top


Bond Signing and Intake
1.	Why is there a need for a trainee to be bonded?
	Bonds are administered to ensure that the trainee serves a reasonable length of time in the organisation to impart the knowledge/skills acquired from the training. If the trainee fails to serve the bond period, the Government has to recover in full the liquidated damages from the trainee. A specimen copy of the Training Deed is provided to the trainee. It is advised that trainees and the sureties read through the Training Deed. back to top


2.	What is a surety?
	The surety countersigns the Training Deed together with the trainee and he or she acts as a person undertaking the liability to ensure that the trainee serves his or her bonded period of 2 years. If the trainee fails to complete the bonded period, the trainee and the sureties are jointly liable to pay to the Government on the damages incurred. Information on the amount of bonded sum will be given to the trainee during the briefing session back to top


3.	How many sureties are required?
	Each trainee will require 2 sureties at a time. Both the sureties and the trainee required to sign the Training Deed together. back to top


4.	Is there a difference between the 1st and 2nd surety?
	No, both of the sureties will be jointly held liable with the trainee for any remaining period of the bond which the trainee does not fulfill. back to top


5.	What are the criteria must the sureties fulfill?
	The sureties must fulfill the following 5 criteria (which are also reflected in the Letter of Offer): - Singaporean or Permanent Resident - Between 21 to 50 years old - Must not be a party to another existing Scholarship/ Bursary/ Training Bond/ Study Loan Agreement - Must not be a bankrupt back to top


6.	How long is the bond signing session?
	It will take approximately half a day. The trainee and the sureties are to be present throughout the session back to top


7.	What will take place during the bond signing Session?
	The bond signing session will begin with a briefing for the trainee and the sureties. Thereafter, the trainee and sureties will fill up and sign the Training Deed with detailed guidance by Recruitment Officers. The Training Deed will be verified by the Recruitment Officers against the trainee and sureties' NRICs. Sureties are also required to proof that they are gainfully employed by producing a copy for their latest payslip, employment letter or IR8 forms. back to top


8.	Will there be a tour for family members on Intake?
	No, there will not be a tour on intake day. Family members can see the trainees off but they are required to leave the room when the registration starts for the commencement of the training. back to top


9.	Why is the bond signing session & intake not held on the same day?
	The trainee has to complete the training deed before the start of the 6-month residential training. As the training starts officially on intake day, the bond signing session has to be held a few days before intake. The schedule of the bond signing sessions and intake sessions are pre-arranged by Recruitment Officers and Tracom respectively, the trainee and sureties are advised to adhere to the date and time given closely. back to top


10.	One of my sureties is currently serving his National Service. Can he sign the Training Deed?
	No. Both the sureties must be gainfully employed. There is however, no wage limit or requirement that the sureties must fulfill. This is to ensure that the sureties are gainfully employed throughout the period which the trainee is undergoing the course and serving his bond period. For those employed under contract, it is advisable that their contracts should overlap the trainee's course and bond period, so that if the trainee breaches his contract, the sureties would still be capable of discharging their duties. back to top


Training and Bond Period
1.	How long is the training? Do I need to stay at TRACOM?
	You need to go through a 6-month Police Officer Basic Course at Tracom. It is a residential course aimed at equipping new officers with the skills, knowledge and values required for police work. You will undergo physical training, weapon training, unarmed combat fighting and basic footdrill. You will also be taught police procedures and regulations, criminal law and basics of investigation. If Saturday is a non-training day (i.e.: no program for the trainees), trainee will walk out on Friday at 1800hrs and return on Sunday at 2130hrs. On eve of Public Holiday, trainees will walk out at 1800hrs and return on the eve of the next working day at 2130hrs. back to top


2.	Is there any bond if I have completed my NS in SAF or SCDF?
	Yes, a training bond for a period of 2 years will take effect upon completion of the 6-month Police Basic Course back to top


3.	If I am currently serving my National Service with SPF or have completed my National Service with SPF, will I still be bonded?
	No. This is provided you have previously completed 6 months of Basic Training at TRACOM prior to your appointment. back to top


4.	For full-time Police NS personnel and those who have completed their NS in Police, are we required to go through the Police Officer Basic Course at TRACOM?
	No, you need not to go through the course unless you are appointed as a regular Police Officer after 5 years from your ORD date. back to top


Probation Period
1.	How long is the probationary period?
	All newly appointed officers will be put on a one-year probation period, starting from your date of appointment. back to top


Posting
1.	Where will I be posted to after the training in TRACOM?
	Upon completion of the Police Officers' Basic Course, officers will be assigned posting to a Land Division HQ/Neighbourhood Police Centre (NPC)/Specialised Police Unit, depending on your suitability, aptitude and the vacancies available. Shift work is to be expected. back to top

Others
1.	If I'm working in other civil service organisations and statutory boards, will I have to resign from my post before joining the Police?
	If you are working in other civil service organisations, transfer of service to Police may or may not be possible, depending on your present scheme of service and if Heads of Department are agreeable. If you are from statutory boards or government owned private companies, you have to resign from the organisations before joining the Police. back to top


2.	Can serving officers take up part-time studies whilst serving their minimum term of engagement (MTE)?
	Officers may take up part-time studies on their own, subject to exigencies of service. Such studies must also not affect the officer's work performance. The part-time studies can commence anytime after the 6 - month residential training at the Home Team Academy as long as it is supported by the respective supervisor. Thus , there is no need for officers to complete their training bond or fulfil their MTE before commencing the part-time studies . back to top
