Applying for a driving licence
1.	Where can I apply for a new driving licence?
	After passing your practical test, you may apply for your new driving licence at the 3 test centers, For foreign licence conversion, you may apply after passing the Basic Theory Test. Please fill up the pink form provided at the test center before approaching the counter for your conversion. back to top


2.	Can I drive immediately after I receive the acknowledgement slip?
	Yes, you can drive in Singapore immediately after receiving the acknowledgement slip. You are advised not to drive overseas until you have received your driving licence, as the acknowledgement slip may not be recognised by foreign enforcement authorities. back to top


3.	How will I receive my driving licence and how long will it take?
	It will be sent to you by registered post to the address shown on your NRIC, work permit or employment pass. You should receive your licence within 1 month from the date of your application. Please contact us at 65476357 if you do not receive it after 1 month. back to top


4.	Can the driving licence be sent to an address of my choice?
	Yes, you can indicate your preferred local mailing address on the application form. back to top


5.	Can I choose to collect the driving licence at Traffic Police or from the place of application?
	No. It will be mailed to you by registered post unless you made an urgent request supported by documents or ticket reservation indicating you will be leaving Singapore for a period of time. back to top


6.	What happens if nobody is at home to receive my driving licence?
	Like all registered mail, SingPost will leave a note for your collection at the nearest post office within a stipulated time when nobody receives your mail at the directed mailing address. You have to collect the mail personally at the designated Post Office. If you do not collect within the stipulated time, the mail will be returned to Traffic Police Department and you will have to pick it up personally at our service counter, bringing along the receipt and your NRIC/Passport/EP/WP/SP for verification. back to top


7.	What are the documents required when I apply for a driving licence?
	The following are required for new applicants who have just passed their driving test: i) Application form (issued by our staff during your application at the counter) ii) 1 passport size colour photograph with white background iii) NRIC or passport iv) A fee of $50. v) A medical examination report, if applicable (see question 18) back to top


8.	What are the requirements of the photograph to be submitted for the driving licence application?
	The requirements of the photograph to be submitted will be similar to the photo requirements for application for a passport. Photographs that do not conform to this specification may be rejected. The photo requirements are as follows: a) the size of the photograph must be 3.5 centimeters in width and 4.5 centimeters in height without borders, and taken not more than 3 months ago; b) the full face of the applicant must appear in the photograph with the image of the applicant's face measuring between 2.5 centimeters and 3.5 centimeter from chin to crown of head with both ears visible; c) the background screen of the photograph must be white, except that where the applicant's hair is white, the background must be light grey; d) the photograph must be in colour with a matt or semi-matt finish; e) Applicant should not be wearing sunglasses or tinted glasses in the photo submitted; f) Applicant should not be wearing any headgear, unless the applicant habitually wears a headgear in accordance with his religious or racial custom but the headgear must not hide the applicant's facial features; g) Digitally printed photograph must be of high resolution. Poor quality images will be rejected. back to top


9.	Can I apply or renew my driving licence by proxy?
	No proxy will be allowed. Your application has to be made in person as your photograph will need to be verified to ascertain your identity. This step aims to safeguard your interests. back to top


Fees
1.	How much would I have to pay for the Singapore driving licence?
	The fee is $50 for first time application of the Singapore driving licence after you passed your driving test in Singapore. Subsequent replacement is at $25 if your licence is lost or damaged. Foreigners have to pay $50 to renew their licence. back to top


2.	What modes of payment are available?
	For first time applicants, you can pay by NETS or cashcard at the Test Centres where you passed your driving test. For replacement and renewal cases, applicants can pay by Cash, NETS, cashcard at the Traffic Police Department. back to top


Replacement
1.	What happens if my driving licence is lost or damaged?
	You may apply for a replacement licence at Traffic Police Department located at 10 Ubi Avenue 3 Singapore 408865. The replacement fee is S$25. If your driving licence is lost, you will have to sign a declaration at the time of replacement. You will have to surrender the old licence should it be found subsequently. It is an offence to hold 2 driving licences. back to top


Renewal and Endorsement
1.	How early should I renew my driving licence from the date of expiry?
	You may renew your licence not earlier than 1 month before the expiry date unless supported by documents showing that you will be out of Singapore during that period. back to top


2.	What do I do when I have passed the test to drive an additional class of vehicle?
	When you obtain an additional class of licence, you can apply for a replacement of your driving licence at any of the Test Centres or Traffic Police Department. The replacement fee is $25. Alternatively, you may choose the option of having an endorsement sticker pasted on the reverse side of the driving licence to show the additional class of licence. This is available at any of the Testing Centres at no cost. back to top


3.	What if my 'endorsement sticker' is damaged?
	You can obtain a replacement at Traffic Police Department or the Testing Centres at no cost. back to top


4.	Do I need to resubmit my photograph if I wish to replace my driving licence?
	Yes, you are required to submit a recent photograph every time you apply for a replacement. back to top


5.	Is there a need to change the photograph on the driving licence periodically?
	It is not necessary for you to replace your photograph periodically. However, if you wish to do so, you may replace your driving licence at Traffic Police Department at a fee of $25. You will have to surrender the original driving licence. back to top


Elderly Drivers
1.	At what age am I required to undergo a medical examination?
	For class 2B/2A/2/3/3A licence holders, the frequency of medical examination will be once every three years from age of 65 onwards. You will therefore only need to go for the medical checkups at age 65, 68, 71, 74 and so on. However, for Class 4, 4A or 5 licence holders, you will need to go for an annual medical examination from age of 65 years at any of the Polyclinics and you also have to pass a proficiency test before you are allowed to drive. back to top


2.	What will happen when I am due for a medical check up when I reach age 65?
	(a) Class 2B/2A/2/3A/3 licence holders A letter will be sent to you 8 weeks prior to your 65th birthday, informing you to go for a medical examination. The medical examination must be conducted by a Singapore registered medical practitioner. You may submit the results of the medical examination in person, by fax or mail. If you are sending us the original copy, always keep a copy for your own reference. If you are certified fit to drive by the doctor, your licence will then be valid for the next 3 years until age 68. A notification of the validation of your licence will be sent to you upon receiving your favourable medical report, if we receive an unfavourable report, you will be asked to surrender your driving licence. (b) Class 4A/4/5 licence holders You need to go for medical check up every year starting from the age of 65 all the way till 69. A letter will be sent to you 8 weeks prior to your birthday, informing you to go for medical examination. The medical examination must be done at a Polyclinic and the result has to be submitted to the Jurong Test Center before you are allowed to register for the proficiency test. You need to pass the proficiency test before you are allowed to drive again. back to top


3.	What if I wish to cancel my class 4A/4/5 driving licence?
	If you do not wish to continue holding on to any class of licence, you have to obtain endorsement on your driving licence at Traffic Police Department in person or via proxy with an authorization letter. Cancellation cannot be done simply by writing to us or striking out the classes in the medical form. back to top


4.	What if I fail to submit a certificate of medical fitness?
	Under Sec 37(9) of the Road Traffic Act, your driving licence will cease to be valid if you fail to submit a certificate of medical fitness and you will not be allowed to drive. You will be required to surrender your invalid licence to Traffic Police. Anyone caught driving with an invalid licence may be charged for driving without a valid licence under Sec 35(1) of the Road Traffic Act. back to top


5.	What if I fail to surrender my driving licence after failing to submit my certificate of medical fitness?
	In this case, failure to surrender your licence is an offence under the Road Traffic Act. This offence carries a fine of not exceeding $1000 or imprisonment for a term not exceeding 3 months upon conviction. back to top


Others
1.	How long will the Singapore driving licence be valid for?
	The driving licences issued to citizens and permanent residents of Singapore are valid for life with no expiry date, while those issued to foreigners are valid for a period of up to 5 years. back to top


2.	Will I have to surrender my driving licence if I am suspended, disqualified or when my licence is revoked?
	Yes, you have to surrender your driving licence to the Traffic Police within the stipulated date indicated on the suspension, disqualification or revocation order, failure of which court action may be taken against you. back to top


3.	Will separate licences be issued for probationary licence holders and qualified licence holders?
	No, they will be issued with the same licence. Probationary licence holders will be easily identified, as the pass date of each class of licence will be printed clearly on the reverse side of the licence. back to top


4.	Am I eligible to apply for a driving licence if my old paper licence has expired for more than 3 years?
	Under the Road Traffic Act, if your paper licence has expired for 3 years or more, it shall be of no effect and you will have to pass the Theory Tests and Practical Driving Test to obtain a new driving licence. back to top


5.	Since my photograph is on the driving licence, can I use it as a form of identification?
	Your driving licence identifies you as a person licensed to drive vehicles of a certain class. It should not be used as a substitute for the NRIC. back to top
