Can my child solve word problems using algebra at primary level?
Your child can use any method to solve word problems as long as the method used is clearly presented and mathematically sound. However, children are not required to use algebra to solve word problems at this level.
My child has already been exempted from offering Mother Tongue Language (MTL) in primary school. Will I have to re-apply for MTL exemption when he/she is promoted to Secondary 1?
No, it is not necessary to re-apply for MTL exemption when your child is promoted to Secondary 1. He/she will continue to be exempted from offering MTL.
My child has been abroad for some time. Is he required to study a Mother Tongue Language (MTL)?
Returning Singaporeans who join a local school mid-stream can apply to the Ministry of Education through the school for exemption from studying their official Mother Tongue Language (MTL) or to study a non-official language such as French, German, Japanese, Arabic, Burmese or Thai, in lieu of MTL. The application must be submitted through your child’s school and will be considered on a case by case basis.
Would students who are exempted from offering Mother Tongue Language at the Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE) be at a disadvantage as compared to those who offer the subject at PSLE?
No. These students' PSLE aggregate scores would be adjusted so that they are neither disadvantaged nor advantaged.
Who can opt for Foundation Mother Tongue Language (MTL) in primary schools (Primary 5-6) or MTL ‘B’ in secondary schools?
The Foundation and ‘B’ syllabuses focus on oral and listening skills, with very little demand on writing skills.
Parents can explore the option of Foundation Mother Tongue Language (MTL) with the primary schools if their children shows difficulty in coping with the standard curriculum.
Students who obtained Grade C or below in MTL at the PSLE are eligible to take MTL ‘B’ in secondary schools. Students eligible for MTL ‘B’ will be able to offer MTL ‘B’ in their secondary school at the beginning of the school year. They will attend classes in their secondary school if MTL ‘B’ is offered in the school. If the school does not offer such courses, the students will have to study MTL ‘B’ at a centre of their choice outside curriculum time.
