What is the procedure for importation of irradiated food and do I need to obtain a licence?
A licence is required for the import and sale of food exposed to ionizing radiation.
The importer has to submit an application for an irradiated food licence and produce a Certificate of Irradiation indicating the type of food, brand name, quantity, batch number, country of origin, type of treatment given, dosage, name of institution that carried out the irradiation treatment. The certificate shall certify that the ionizing radiation has been conducted in accordance with the Codex Recommended International Code of Practice For the Operation of Radiation Facilities Used For the Treatment of Foods and that such irradiated food meets the Codex Standards for Irradiated foods.
