Why does the government retain existing ACRA Registration Numbers as UEN for businesses and local companies?
To minimise adoption costs and disruptions, the ACRA Registration Number is retained as the UEN for these two entity types as they comprise more than 85% of all entities registered in Singapore.

When will government agencies start using UEN?
For a start, 51 government agencies will use UEN to interact with entities for both over-the-counter and online interactions from 1 January 2009. These include agencies with high volume of interactions with entities, such as the Accounting and Corporate Regulatory Authority (ACRA), Central Provident Fund Board (CPFB), the Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore (IRAS) and the Singapore Customs. Among the 51 government agencies, there are 12 government agencies that will discontinue the use of their existing identification numbers and replace them with UEN.
All other government agencies will use UEN to interact with entities by 1 July 2009.
